1.Brick
This was one of the firstpieces Idid atthe start of the semester as a partof the 10 paintings a day series. My subject was a blue brick thatIpainted to achieve the vibrantblue color realistically.. The firstpainting was achieved by focusing on the negative space and using softstrokes to build the brick. The 2nd photo was achieved using values of blue and black to create the brink with imagionary lines of where the brink ‘s surface changes into a differentdimensional read. I think the surfaces turned outvey readable as well as the underlying shadow.
The piece was done on water color paper... with water color paint.
2. Gouache self
This piece introduced me to the paintnig media of gouache.Ilike this type of paintcompared to acrylic and water color because itwas easier to achieve a variety of values to getmy folds of the hoodie looking more realistic than if I had just used white paintto bring outthe highlights. Even though itmay be vain Iused my favorite subject again on this piece...ME.
3.COMIC DMv
Ienjoyed the entire process ittook to crete itand itturned outsuccessfully conveying the message itwas meantto. This piece required numerous processes involving sketch after sketch thatneeded to getapproved in order to move onto the nextstep, through pencil sketches, detailed pencil sketches, line drawing, , color experimentation and finally the computer process. Ilearned a little aboutthe importance of line representation in cartoons to create shadows, texture and variety of values, which really helped toward the final processes of the projectbefore itwas taken into the computer for added color. In order to getthe final productIhad to san my cartoon in 2 parts: one with the background and the second with the chalk outline done as a pencil sketch. The latter of the two was later scanned into photoshop and inverted to create a more readable chalk outline, withoutrelying on photoshop to create itfor me through effects. The brightvibrantcolors kind of reminds me of the Simpsons artistry style for some reason. Overall Ispentabout12 hours on this piece through the numerous processes, and itwas all worth itjustto make someone with a sadistic humor laugh atthe D.O/T.G.-- the death of the testgiver.
4.3 image montage
When Ivisualize this pieces in my head itshows the progression of the any things Ihave learned thus far in illustration. FirstIhad to chose subjects thatwere interesting and would complimenteach other spatially. Initially Ihad to identify in preliminary sketches which of the 3 subjects would be the largest, which would be in the foreground and vice vera. Outside of the piece visually Ialso liked the process ittook to getto the final product. In the third stage of the projectIhad to create a half size maker comp, which was one of the firsttimes Iused the marker technique correctly from lightto dark to achieve a variety of values, shades, gradientblends, and vibrantcolors. The background was also dealtwith in the process to create a background thatwould complimentthe subjectin a colorful way butnottaking to much attention away from them. Initially Ididn’twanta colored background butafter trying a few Isaw thatithelped the composition of the piece far more than a plain gray background did. The red shades complimentthe red nithe textof the red bull can and the small piece of the red button of the nintendo controller whcih was originally black and white butlater changed into a monochromatic blue. The piece was done on gesso covered illustration board with gouache paint. Overall Ispentway over 15 hours n this piece combining the many processes thatittook to getapprovals and experimentation with composition and color.
5. Conservation piece-- party beatdown
This 10 by 10 piece was done in maker line work first and later scanned into photoshop to be colored and shaded. For the fonal productI changed the colors up a little bit to make them be on both sides of the spectrum of extreme, with the vibrant pink and dark black boots. I also changed the floor from a wodd panel into a checkered linolium that adds more negative space to be handled. I was goin for a catoony effect in this conservative piece and that is what i got : )
6.MO STAmp
This piece was meant to be a stamp design which figurtively depicted what I thought abou twhen i tought of Missouri, and it does justthat. When Ithink of Missouri Iprimarily think of the capitol buiding in Jefferson City thatIhave visited so many times, Secondly Ithink of the summers Ispentin the Lake of the Ozarks ( symbolized by the water, boat, and the girl on the beach chair). The lastaddition Iadded was apartof the history of notjustMissouri butthe country, the Sacacgawea dollar, symbolizing the expedition of Lewis and Clark.
The piece was done on an illustraion board with water color paint.
Sound Illustration
7. Crack.. thats the sound of a finished product. Above is the final illustration for the sound project. Ivery happy with how itturned out, i achieved the spatial recognition i was aiming for with the band in the background The bar background of the wall and lights is more readable as lights shining in the lightblue sections. the crowd reads as a crowd of people and nota blob of flesh. and lastbutnotleastis the disgruntled main focus, the man with the cracked lenses whcih i also think was portrayed well especially the blue lightbouncing off of the side ohf his face.
The piece was done on a gesso covered illustration board with gouache paint.
8. Book Cover
.This is the final production of the book cover design for my book of choice, The Lord of Flies. The Image outined in white is the actual illustration thatwas done originally meantto be the book cover butIlater decided to make the illustration a partof the final cover notthe only contributing factor. The illustration was done on a gesso covered hotpress illustration board with both gouche and water color. Idid two version of it, the other with line art, butitended up looking to controlled for the subjectmatter so itwas scrapped. The designs in the background were justcomplimentary elements to the colors already existentin my pallette.
